WhenIstartedasanenergyclientcoverageinvestmentbankeratLehmanBrothersKuhnLoebin1980,thepersonalcomputerhadyettobeinvented.Spreadsheetswerejustthat–largepadsoflinedpaperandcalculationsweredoneinyourheadvia“topside”analysisoronecouldbefoundfuriouslyworkinganHP12Cwithapencilandalargeerasernearby.

Today, 35yearslater,Iamstillaninvestmentbanker,surprisinglyatalegacyofthesamefirmatwhichIstarted–Barclays[BarclaysboughttheNorthAmericanassetsofLehmanoutofbankruptcy].Technologyhasradicallychanged–althoughIamnotsurethatabigeraserwouldnotstillbehandy.Andevenasthegeopoliticalworldhasaltereddramatically,thepriceofoilisagainfuelingvolatilityanduncertainty.Sometimesthemorethingschange,themoretheystaythesame.Butthereisalwayssomethingnewintheworldofmarketsandfinanceastheysynthesizeeconomics,politicsandtechnology.ThisiswhyIloveworkingonWallStreet.Ifocusonprovidingclients–externalandinternal–effectiveandtimelydeliveryofthebestadvicewehavetoofferonhowtonavigatemarketsandstrategicallypositioncompaniestogrow.Icontinuetocoversomeenergyclients,butmyportfolioandplatformhasgrowntoincludeindustriesandcompaniesIneverimaginedwouldexistasIsattherewithmyeraserin1980.

抓住机会，学习新知识——成为某一方面的专家。主动接受那些让你有些惧怕的任务。这些任务将让你保持警觉，这样你才不会“停留在初级岗位，没有晋升机会”。相反，你可以主动出击抓住机会——调整路线，迎接挑战。只有在面临争议和冲突的时候，创新和创意才会出现。接受这样的挑战。
